2 Uses

The infinitive has these uses:

  • It may function as noun. As noun the infinitive performs several functions within the clause.

Comer verdura cada día es bueno para la salud. (Subject)

Caminar por esta cuesta es muy cansado. (Subject)

Quiero cenar ahora. (Direct object)

Me gusta probar cosas nuevas. (Direct object)

Hemos trabajado sin parar desde las dos. (Circumstantial complement)

The infinitive may be used with adjectives or determiners. The verb functioning as noun is always masculine and singular.

A mi entender esto es absurdo.

El insistente piar de los pájaros me despertó.

Este temer todo y a todos no me deja vivir. theatrical

The infinitive in substantive function may also be qualified by adverbs.

(El) comer abundantemente no es bueno para la salud.

(El) hablar pausadamente ayuda a que los demás nos entiendan mejor.

Some verbs are also nouns: el quehacer, el poder, el deber, el haber, el amanecer, el atardecer, etc.

  • In popular Spanish, the infinitive is used to give commands equivalent to those given in second person of theplural of the imperative popular.

¡Callaros! popular (= ¡Callaos!)

¡Salir de aquí! (= ¡Salid de aquí!)

  • It is used in impersonal commands, mainly in signs and bills.

No fumar. No pisar el césped.

  • It is used with some prepositions in these structures:

Temporary. Al + infinitive.

Al acabar la clase, salieron todos y el aula quedó vacía.

Al levantarse de la cama, notó olor a gas.

Final. Para + infinitive.

Para hacer una paella, hace falta arroz.

Se portó así para llamar la atención.

Causal. Por + infinitive.

Por comprar un paquete de detergente, me han regalado una botella de lejía.

Por quedar bien con todo el mundo has hecho el ridículo.

Conditional. De + infinitive.

De llegar antes que yo, prepara la cena.

De no ser eso cierto, lo habría publicado la prensa.

Concessive. Con + infinitive.

Con hacerle la pelota al profe, no aprobó.

Con gritar, no vas a resolver el problema.

Imperative. A + infinitive.

¡A callar y a hacer lo que te he dicho! (= ¡Calla y haz lo que te he dicho!)

¡A dormir! (= ¡Ve a dormir!)

The infinitive may be preceded by some prepositions in different values, but never by ante, bajo, durante, hacia, según, contra and desde.
