Absolute superlative: general

The absolute superlative shows quality in the highest degree or inthe lowest; i.e. may express superiority or inferiority.

1 The absolute superlative of superiority may be expressed this way:

  • Muy + adjective.

Esta chica es muy guapa.

Este libro es muy interesante.

  • The suffixes -ísimo, -ísima also maybe added to adjectives.

Esta chica es guapísima.

Este libro es interesantísimo.

  • The prefixs: super-, re-, requete- popular, extra- and hiper- also express quality in superlative degree.

Super- juvenile: superbonito, supersimpático, superamable, supercaro, supertonto, superfino.
Requete- popular: requetebonito, requetesimpático, requetelisto, requetebueno.
Re- popular: resalado, reguapo, relisto, reviejo.
Extra-: extrafino, extraplano.
Hiper-: hipersensible, hipertenso.

Esta chica es requeteguapa.

Esta chica es reguapa.

Esta chica es superguapa.

2 The absolute superlative of inferiority may be expressed this way.

  • (Muy) poco + positive adjective is used to express in a soft way that something does not like.

Es muy poco simpático.

El libro es poco interesante.

  • -ísimo, -ísima with negative adjectives.

Es chico es feísimo.

El libro es aburridísimo.

  • Con the prefixs super-, re- or requete- followed by negative adjectives.The prefix hipo- is mainly used in medicine.

– Super-: superfeo, superasqueroso.
– Re-: refeo.
– Requete-: requetefeo.
– Hipo-: hipocalórico.

Este chico es requetefeo.

Este chico es superfeo.

Yo sigo una dieta hipocalórica.

3 Without superlative

  • Do not have superlative ending in -ísimo: the adjectives of colour ending in -a: rosa, lila, malva, or in -í: carmesí. Neither have superlative the adjectives ending in -eo: coetáneo, espontáneo, férreo, foráneo, ígneo, lácteo, momentáneo, sanguíneo, the adjectives ending in -ico: cáustico, colérico, empírico, lógico, selvático, satírico, tétrico, único, the adjectives ending in -fero: aurífero, frutífero, many of the adjectives ending in -il: inmóvil, juvenil, pueril, varonil and those ending in -imo: legítimo, íntimo. Tampoco arduo, baladí, necio, sobrio, sombrío, vario, vituperable. Do not have superlative in -ísimo many compound adjectives: agridulce, carnívoro, multicolor, malsano, magnánimo nor the numerals: uno, dos, primer, segundo, etc.
  • The adjectives máximo, mínimo, óptimo and pésimo may not appear in superlative patterns, because they already mean superiority or inferiority.
  • Some adjectives may not build the superlative in -ísimo nor with muy: bilingüe, celeste, civil, diario, difunto, eterno, fatal, idéntico, ileso, infernal, infinito, inmenso, inmortal, inmutable, nocturno, oblicuo, rectangular, semanal, soluble, terrenal, terrestre, triangular, último, vespertino.
  • Neither admit degrees the adverbs: ahora, hoy, ayer, entonces, siempre, ya, aquí, ahí, apenas, nada, quizá(s), acaso.

4 Other adverbs

Other adverbs apart from muy, may be used in patterns of relative absolute:extremadamente, sumamente, extraordinariamente, altamente, inmensamente, en alto grado, en sumo grado; also with adverbial phrases tope de and la mar de of the popular Spanish.
