- Este and its derivative refer to something or to someone physically close or considered by the speaker typical of his field.
Esta casa no está en venta. (Physical closeness)
Este niño es vecino mío. (Field)
Aquel and its derivative refer to something physically far or to something not typical of the field’s speaker nor his interlocutor.
Aquellas casas de allí no están en venta. (Physical distance)
Aquel niño no es vecino mío. (Field)
Ese and its derivative refer to things that the speaker considers of his interlocutor, because they are more close of him or because belongs to him.
–¿Me pasas esas tijeras?
–¿Cuáles? ¿Estas? (Field)
- Ese, aquel and their derivatives refer to the past; este to the present or the future.
Este viernes iremos al médico. (Este viernes = el próximo viernes)
Ese viernes no pude ir a clase. (Ese viernes = aquel viernes = un viernes del pasado)
- The demonstrative adjectives usually precede the noun.
En esta casa todos somos honrados.
Dame esas toallas.
It is possible este / esta / estos / estas + numeral + noun.
Dame aquellas tres toallas.
Estos tres primeros meses del año apenas hemos vendido nada.
It is also possible todo / toda / todos / todas + este / esta / estos / estas + noun.
Todos estos problemas son culpa tuya.
Todas aquellas postales te las envié yo.
If the demonstrative adjective follows the noun, the sense of the expression may be pejorative. It is always a structure from popular speech and the noun is preceded by the definite article.
La tía esa es una marrana. derogatory
La película aquella no estaba mal. popular

Este, ese, aquel and their derivatives may function as pronoun. In 2010 the Real Academia de la Lengua drived an orthographic reform in the demonstrative pronouns field: before the reform, forms like éste, ésta, ése, ésa… might be found; after the reform they are forbidden forms.
These pronouns agree in gender and number with the noun they are referring to.
Hay muchas clases de aceitunas. Dame 200 g de estas.
- to a present persons with a demonstrative pronoun is considered unpolite.
–¿Quién ha roto mi pluma estilográfica?
–Ha sido este.
- May do a distributive function.
Este quiere un coche, aquel un apartamento en la playa.

3 Determiner or pronoun?
It is not always easy to differentiate between determiner and pronoun. Some cases are very clear.
Quiero este libro. (Adjective)
Quiero este. (Pronoun)
Others make us doubt:
Estos que te traigo son nuevos. (Hablamos de discos.)
Esta de la derecha está rota.(Hablamos de puertas.)
Este último me ha salido mejor.(Hablamos de pasteles.)
Este en oro costaría un ojo de la cara. (Hablamos de un collar.)
One function may be distinguished from the other by replacing este, ese, aquel or their derivatives by a definite article. The transformation is possible with the determiners, but not with the pronouns.
Los que te traigo son nuevos.
La de la derecha está rota.
El último me ha salido mejor.
