The root of the preterit is the infinitive without the ending -ar, -er or -ir.

2 Uses
The preterit has these uses:
- Single completed past event, finished and out of the speaker’s mind. It is used mainly with these adverbs or adverbial complements: ayer, anoche, la semana pasado, el año pasado, entonces, aquel día, etc.
Trabajé tres años en aquella fábrica.
Ayer fue martes.
La guerra acabó en 1945.
- To express consecutive actions in the past.
Se levantó de la silla, le pegó un bofetón y se fue.
Se me cayó el libro, me agaché y lo recogí del suelo.
- It interrumpts an action going on in the speech of the past.
Me estaba duchando y alguien llamó a la puerta.
Cuando pasaba por delante de aquella puerta, escuché un disparo.
