Capital and small letters

1 We write with capital letters:

• The first word of a text and the first word after full-stop.
• All the proper names: Juan, Juanito, Barcelona, París, Moscú, Cantinflas.
  However are in small letter: la luz de la luna, la luz del sol, y la tierra. The geographical names formed by noun and adjective also are in capital letter: Mar Mediterráneo, Océano Atlántico, Sierra Morena.
  Also the names of geographical areas when referring to specific countries:Oriente, Occidente, Ultramar, el Nuevo Mundo.
• The proper names of divine beings or the nouns or pronous referring to them: Dios, la Virgen, el Creador, el Redentor, el Salvador, la Macarena, la Milagrosa. . In general, capital letter is used with many religious nouns: los Santos Óleos, la Eucaristía, los Santos Sacramentos, la Creación, los Padres de la Iglesia.

Amaos los unos a los otros como Yo os he amado.

• The titles: el Duque de Badajoz, el Marqués del Duero. Also the nicknames of kings: Alfonso el Sabio, Fernando el Católico.
  Capital letter is used when the noun of a post refers to a specific person: el Rey, el Presidente del Gobierno, el Ministro de Justicia, el Juez.

El Rey no ha dado su permiso.

El Gobernador piensa lo contrario.

• The abridged treatments: Sr. (señor), D. (don), Ilmo. (ilustrísimo), Ilm. Sr. (ilustrísimo señor), Excm. Sr. (excelentísimo señor).
  When using the full form (usted, señor, don) the first letter may be in small or capital letters, but we tend to capital letters.
  Also are in capital letters San, Santo and Santa before noun of saint: San Pedro, San Ignacio, Santa Marta, Santa Isabel.
• The nouns and the adjectives of institutions: Ministerio de Economía, Museo Arqueológico Provincial.
  Also are in capital letters the nouns referring to a specific institution: el Estado, las Cortes, el Gobierno, la Universidad, la Iglesia, el Clero, la Milicia, el Reino. También, la Península cuando se refiera a España.
• The nouns and adjectives of the title of works: Cien Años de Soledad, Diccionario de Sinónimos, el Padre Nuestro, la Constitución.
• In the past each verse line used to begin with capital letter, although the modern poets also use small initial letter.
• The letters of Roman numerals: Juan XXIV, siglo XIX. However, sometimes, also are written in small letters.
• The ch and the ll in capital letter are : Ch and Ll.
• The holidays are usually in capital letters: Año Nuevo, la Anunciación, la Ascensión, la Asunción, el Día de Ramos, Domingo de Ramos, el Día de Reyes, Jueves Santo, Viernes Santo, Semana Santa, Navidad, Pascua de Resurrección, Domingo de Pentecostés, Pascua, etc. Others, a minority, are used in small letter: carnestolendas, nochebuena, noche vieja, lunes santo (and all days from Semana Santa except thursday and friday), el día de los inocentes, día de difuntos, miércoles de ceniza. Others, however, may be found in capital or small letters: Carnaval o carnaval, Cuaresma or cuaresma.
• In the past, historic epochs were written in capital letter, now is more common find them in small letter: la edad media. On the contrary, the events are mainly in capital letter: el Renacimiento, la Revolución Francesa, la Reconquista, la Segunda Guerra mundial, la Guerra de Bosnia.
• The part corresponding to families, subfamilies and gender of the scientific nouns in Latin of animals and plants are in capital letters: Quercus suber.
