1 Formation

The root of the past participle is the infinitive without the ending -ar, -er or -ir.

2 Uses

The past participle has these uses:

  • The past participle forms the perfect tenses of a verb. See under each perfect tense.

He pensado en ti.

Yo había ido allí.

In this case there is not agreement between past participle and subject.

Elena ha pensado en ti.

María había ido allí.

  • The past participle forms passive clauses. Here there is agreement between past participle and patient subject.

Las clases han sido suspendidas.

El vuelo ha sido cancelado.

Also there is agreement between subject and estar followed by past participle. These clauses have a passive sense.

La puerta está cerrada.

El supermercado está cerrado.

There is also agreement with other verbs-link not bringing extra meaning.

Él andaba enamorado de Inés.(= El estaba enamorado de Inés.)

Ella andaba enamorada de Gabriel. (= Ella estaba enamorada de Gabriel.)

  • It may function as an adjective. As an adjective has gender and number, and agrees with a noun:

As an adjective may be an attribute.

Pedro es muy considerado. (Past participle)

Pedro es muy alto. (Adjective)

Both considerado and alto are attributes.

Moreover, the past participle, as the adjective, may be a noun complement; also in agreement with it.

Los años pasados en el extranjero le sirvieron para madurar como persona.

In this case the past participle is equivalent to a relative clause.

Los años que pasó en el extranjero le sirvieron para madurar como persona.

  • It may function as an adverb. The past participle (or the adjective) may agree with the direct object.

Encontré a mi prima deprimida. (Past participle)

Encontré a mi prima triste. (Adjective)

Also with the subject.

Isabel se marchó de allí indignada. (Past participle)

Isabel se marchó de allí contenta. (Adjective)

The participles may express manner, cause or time.

Encontré a mi prima muy deprimida. (¿Cómo encontraste a tu prima?) (Manner)

(Yo) Harta de esperarte, me fui. (¿Por qué te fuiste?) (Cause)

Acabados los dos tiempos reglamentarios, jugaron la prórroga. (= Después de los dos tiempos reglamentarios, jugaron la prórroga.) (Time)
