1 Cierto, cierta, ciertos and ciertas are indefinite adjectives that precede the noun. They are used to hide a piece of information; sometimes the information is not known by the speaker, or may not be expressed; i.e. we talk about something specific, even though unknown.
Cierta persona que tú y yo conocemos ha ganado a la lotería. Adivina quién.
Ciertos vecinos, los de siempre, no pagan el recibo de la escalera.
Sometimes they mean algo de preceded by uncountable nouns.
Ha acabado la carrera con ciertos problemas.
Sentí cierto temor al dejar mi pueblo.
Tengo ciertas dudas de que eso sea como tú dices.
2 When cierto, cierta, ciertos or ciertas follow the noun, are qualifying adjectives and mean seguro, verdadero or conforme a la verdad.
Es una noticia cierta; la he leído en una revista.
3 They may not be used as pronouns.
